Tips for choosing the best mattress

Choosing the best mattress is largely a matter of personal preference. Some people prefer a soft mattress whilst others feel they need firm support. Certainly, if you suffer from lower back pain, lack of sufficient support from your mattress can make your condition worse. The right mattress is essential if you want to enjoy the right amount and quality of sleep to maintain your health and well-being.
The following points are intended as general guidelines to help you make this important decision.
- Look for the best value, not necessarily the cheapest. High quality mattresses have thick padding and more springs and so tend to be more expensive. Ensure that the mattress is made with good quality materials. However, do not assume that more expensive necessarily means more comfortable. There is only one way to find out if the mattress is comfortable and that is to test it. Lie on it for a few minutes. If you sleep with a partner, you should both lie on it to make sure you both have enough room to stretch out and move around. Also check whether the mattress has a guarantee.
- Competition among retailers is fierce. So make sure you shop around. If you find your ideal mattress in one store, look for it in other stores and compare the price. This may seem like a lot of effort to you but it will be worth it. A good mattress is an important purchase and any mistake could be a costly one.
- Buy from reputable outlets. Also, when you are shopping around to compare prices, look at the level of customer service provided by each retailer. Ask whether they offer free delivery and/or collection of your old mattress. Check their returns policy just in case, in spite of all your efforts, the mattress turns out to be unsuitable for you.
