Growing Up With Bunk Beds

Perhaps one of the greatest experiences in a parent’s life is the moment he or she decides what bed to bring home for the child. Bringing home the first real bed, the one that means the child is no longer a baby, can truly be an emotional time, especially for the mother. The hope, of course, is that this investment is one that will last several years and carry the child at least into adolescence. Even though some people, particularly those who do not have children, will not realize that this occasion is truly special, beds play an important role in the growth and maturity of the child.

Bunk beds, for example, are not just a place to sleep, but they also provide a way for a child to demonstrate that he or she is growing up. If the younger child is moving into a room with an older child for the first time, he or she will likely see it as a rite of passage, of course never using such words to describe the experience. Nonetheless, the younger child will understand that a move to the bunk beds and out of his or her toddler bed means that he or she is finally no longer a baby. Sleeping with the older sibling in these special beds means that he or she is growing up.

It’s a time when he or she understands that not only is the bedtime routine changing, but soon he or she will also be able to do other things that “big kids” do, such as riding bicycles and playing sports. It also means more responsibility, since there are no guardrails to contain the child. This is a powerful way of letting the child know that he or she is in control of his or her proper behaviour.
