Types of Mattress

The mattress has it's origins in Arabia but has been used for thousands of years in one way or another. Really, the only feature of a mattress that interests most of us is how comfortable it is. However, the type of mattress has a significant bearing on the level of comfort it provides.
There are six main types of mattress:
Continuous Coil Mattresses
This is the most affordable type of mattress. The springs are linked together and all move as one unit. This means that you are more likely to be disturbed if your partner is restless in bed. It wears out more quickly than more expensive mattresses. Tranquility Beds do not supply this type of mattress spring unit.
Open Spring Mattresses
This is the next affordable mattress and consists of single springs linked by a wire. This has the benefit of distributing weight across the mattress and offering a good level of support. The open spring mattress is one of the most popular types of mattress unit.
Pocket Sprung Mattresses
This is the most luxurious type of spring unit mattress. Springs are sewn into individual pockets and linked together in a honeycomb manner. These provide better support than continuous coil or open spring mattresses and are good if you sleep on your side. The pocket sprung mattress is often found in high end beds. An example of a pocket sprung bed is the Cambridge pocket sprung bed.
Memory Mattresses
These have a layer of temperature-sensitive material on the top. The memory foam was originally designed by NASA and is a high tech sleeping material. They are more expensive but give good support if you suffer from painful joints. Another benefit of memory foam is that they are hypoallergenic. The Patron memory foam divan by Tranquility is an example of a bed which uses memory foam.
Orthopaedic Mattresses
There is really no such thing as an “orthopaedic” mattress. They are really just extra firm. There is no extensive medical research on the link between mattresses and back pain. Many people buy “orthopaedic” beds as they are convinced by claims that they are beneficial for people with back pain. In fact, some recent research has shown that too firm a bed can make back pain worse. Try and strike a balance between firmness and comfort.
Pure Foam Mattresses
This is a good option if you suffer from an allergy to dust mites. All types of mattress have their advantages and disadvantages. You should be aware that mattresses are increasingly made from a mixture of materials so their type may not be clearly identified in the shops.
