How to choose the right pillow for you

Posted by Steve on 01/08/2009 under Pillows.

A good pillow is essential for a good night’s sleep.  Choosing a pillow is very much a matter of personal preference but it is essential that your pillow, besides being comfortable, gives you enough support to keep your head in alignment with your back and spine. Otherwise, you will not get the quality of sleep you need to remain in good health.

There are a surprising number of factors to consider when buying a pillow.

One is the sleeping position. If you tend to sleep on your side, then a firm pillow is essential to give your head and neck the support they need. If you like to sleep on your back, a less firm pillow is more comfortable. If you sleep on your stomach, you should choose a soft pillow to ease any possible strain on your neck.

If you sleep on either your back or your side and the pillow is too high, your neck will be bent forward in an unnatural position. This will cause neck strain and may also cause a narrowing of the air ways which may affect breathing or cause snoring. If it is too low, your neck muscles will be strained. Those of us who sleep on our back should have your pillows higher than those who sleep on their side. The height of your pillow depends, in part, on your body’s measurements but, the optimum height for most of us, is around six inches. If you sleep on your stomach, your pillow should be virtually flat.

A good pillow should mould itself to the sleeping position and the shape of the person to ensure a good night’s rest. To really benefit from a good pillow you should also look at investing in a good quality mattress such as a memory foam which would perfectly compliment the pillow.
