Buying a Mattress for Back Support

Posted by Jay on 03/08/2009 under Sleep Quality.

Mattresses should provide comfortable sleep. Any mattress that does not do so could give you a back pain. Good mattresses come with an inbuilt back support, such as spring coils and padding, and mould to the contours of the body. Lower back pain is a common problem with people sleeping on ‘bad’ mattresses.

What To Look For in a Mattress

back painMattresses come with varying arrangements of spring coils and padding, and are available with depths ranging from 6 inches up to 18 inches. Check through a number of different mattresses to assess which mattress suits you. The depth of the mattress, the number of coils, and the thickness of the padding on the coils is a matter of personal choice.

You would obviously like to wake up fresh without any soreness of muscles. Many people think that a firm mattress is ideal, but too much of firmness may not be such a good thing. You could wake up with a body ache. Look for a mattress with medium firmness to it, with padding thick enough to support your back. This will lend to greater comfort.

Try out different mattresses when you visit a mattress store. Lie down on a firm mattress. Use the same posture you would when sleeping at home. Take your time; spend around 10 to 15 minutes. Then pick one that is soft. Test it by lying on it for a while, as well. This will give you an idea of the comfort. Try a few mattresses, and pick one that is firm, yet not very hard.

Alternately, you can consult with your doctor who can suggest the type of mattress most suitable for your back pain.
