Getting a Good Night Sleep at Night

Sleep is important. Most people sleep well at night. But there are a few others who cannot fall asleep easily, or they wake up, tossing and turning, in the middle of the night. Not being able to sleep well because of uncomfortable mattresses and pillows is one thing. However, there are other factors too that cause ‘sleepless’ nights. You need to sleep well at night and you need to stick to a routine and create an ambiance to get a relaxed sleep.
- Set some good daytime habits – Start by waking up at a fixed time each morning. Avoid lazing in the bed, and open the drapes, to let the sunlight in.
- Avoid taking a nap in the afternoon. Our ancestors probably had an idea about bad sleeping habits to have started having tea in the late afternoon. This helped avoid an afternoon nap! A power nap of a maximum of 20 minutes may be alright, but never longer than this.
- The notion that taking caffeine and alcohol will help induce sleep is wrong. Cut back on your consumption of the two and avoid taking them a few hours before bedtime.
- Create a Right Bedroom Ambiance – Ensure your mattress and pillows are comfortable. Your bed should be large enough to accommodate the two of you comfortably (if you have a partner, that is).
- Ensure that your drapes are dark and do not allow the morning light, or the light from the street lamps, to filter in the room. See to it that your bedroom is noiseless. Street noise does tend to filter in so you may consider using earplugs.
- Keep the bedroom temperature at a comfortable level.
- Ensure you follow one great Bedroom Commandment – Use your bed only to sleep in - no books and no TV!
- Some people find that beds that feature aromatherapy help with sleep such as the Perfect Scent by Dura Beds.
