So, you thought you knew everything about beds. You know, you sleep on them and your kids bounce on them. Well, maybe you didn't know everything? Here are a few facts that you probably didn't know about beds.
- Many people talk about orthopaedic beds. In fact there is no such thing as an orthopaedic bed but it is used to describe a firm mattress/bed.
- There are over 100 million working days lost through back problems every year. Bad news if your self employed.
- You can grow in the night by as much as 2cm. During the day your spine is compressed. During the night it has chance to straighten and recover.
- You move approximately 60-70 times every night with up to 12 full body turns.
- On average, a comfortable bed will give you one hours additional sleep per night.
- We use our bed much more than any other piece of furniture in the home.
- A soft sleeping surface makes for a warmer bed as it increases insulation.
- The average life of a mattress is ten years. Obviously, a better quality mattress will last longer.
- 20% of people in the UK suffer from severe lack of sleep
So, there we have a few facts but what do the doctors say?
- 93% of GPs agree that a good, comfortable and supportive bed will improve sleep quality.
- 80% of GPs agree that people do not fully understand the importance of a bed to overall health.
- 12 million people in the UK suffer from some kind of breathing problem, including Asthma. 85% of GPs confirm a link between old beds and Asthma.
- Sleep problems are one of the most common complaints people take to their GP.
