Bedroom Furniture Ideas For Small Apartments

Posted by Steve on 25/09/2009 under Beds.

With apartments in cities becoming more cramped and studio apartments taking over, use the following tips to have the essentials and yet find space in your little escape from the world.

The most elementary bedroom should have a bed. If you have a low ceiling and/or a small room, compromise on dreams of a four-poster. Go for a low bed, preferably without a footboard, to create an illusion of space. Normally wooden beds such as the Rosedale wooden bed can be fairly low to give the impression of height.

If you are not a very tall person, queen-size and full-size beds work well enough. Your bed should fit in your bedroom such that it leaves enough space around it to walk around when changing sheets or accessing the dresser. The ‘no footboard’ idea also helps if you are tall and your room won’t accommodate a king-size bed.

Storage beds are a blessing for small apartments as the huge space under it can be used to store away anything ranging from winter wear, camping gear and extra blankets to clothes you don’t use frequently. The Birkhead is a divan bed which looks more contemporary than many other divan beds.

You will also need a nightstand or bedside table to keep the alarm clock, lamp and other knick-knacks. These come with or without drawers and in different designs. The ideal height of a bedside table is one that is level with the top of your mattress.

The other essential element in a bedroom is a wardrobe or a closet. Built-in ones are more convenient for smaller rooms. If you are considering purchasing one, make a note of the dimensions, so that it can pass easily through the bedroom door.

Sofa beds and trundle beds (which fall in to save space) are good if you have children and too low a ceiling to comfortably accommodate bunk beds. These also come in handy when the teens have sleepover sessions. Tranquility have a great range of guest beds such as the Apollo guest bed.

Daybeds, like sofa beds, also double up as a couch in the daytime to save space. If you have a studio apartment in which your bedroom doubles up as the living room during the day, one of these is almost mandatory.
