Go Green - Tips On Eco-Friendly Bedrooms
Posted by John on 27/09/2009.
Green is no longer just a colour; it is the name of a movement which signifies a healthier life not only for us, but also for the next generation. Protect yourself from harmful chemicals which you may unwittingly expose yourself to, and help preserve the scant resources of the earth. Start with your bedroom - the place where your body rests and recuperates.
Mattress: Polyurethane foams and fire retardant materials such as polybrominated diphenyl ethers contain and emit toxins. These types of mattress or normally reserved for contract beds. Natural wool mattresses are a good eco-friendly alternative.
Mattresses made from 95% natural rubber (latex) are fairly durable and do not form lumps very soon. They are also good for people prone to allergies. Cotton mattresses and organic wool-cotton filled mattresses are also good green options. The Dura cotton contract bed using a 100% cotton fabric. Tranquility Beds uses a local supplier called Northern Comfort who specialise in manufacturing organic bedding.
Sheets, pillowcases and blankets: Did you know your bed linen is treated with carcinogenic chemicals such as formaldehyde to make them soft? Choose organic cotton or bamboo sheets as a healthier option - thread counts in the range of 250-400 offer ideal softness to the sheets.
Whenever you can, use ‘organic bedding,’ that is, sheets and pillowcases made from fibre that is grown without using pesticides or genetic engineering. You will sleep better every night knowing you have done that little extra effort for a better world.
For blankets, use organic wool rather than polyester. You can make attractive duvets by sewing together large bamboo sheets.
Paint: The time you spend sleeping is probably the only time in the day when you spend prolonged and uninterrupted hours breathing in the same air. Make sure every breath is pure and toxin-free. Allow for cross ventilation and circulation of air. Opt for low VOC or no VOC paint options for your walls and furniture. Look for eco-friendly and toxin-free options when choosing your wall paint.
A little effort towards a greener life goes a long way - not only giving us a healthier life, but also leaving the world a better place for our children.
