Having Difficulty Sleeping? A Few Tips To Help You Get A Good Night’s Rest

Posted by Jay on 01/07/2009 under Sleep Quality.

Both the quantity and quality of sleep is important for our health and well-being. For most people, stress and anxiety cause sleep problems. A few simple changes to your daily routine and your sleeping surroundings can solve the problem. Here are a few tips:

Exercise

Regular exercise can help you sleep better. Just 30 minutes a day, preferably early in the day, can bring about an improvement.

Food And Drink

Don’t eat or drink large amounts before bedtime. But don’t go to bed hungry either. A glass of warm milk or camomile tea with a banana or a light sandwich is ideal.

Eliminate Alcohol, Caffeine And Smoking Before Bed

Alcohol may make you sleepy initially, but it will cause frequent waking - although you may not realise it. Caffeine is a stimulant which continues to have an effect on the body for up to 12 hours after you have taken it. Consider restricting your caffeine intake to before lunch. Nicotine is also a stimulant.

Improve Your Sleep Surroundings

Make sure your bedroom is dark, well ventilated, cool and quiet. Your bed should be large enough for you to have plenty of room to stretch out. Use earplugs to reduce any traffic noise filtering into the room. If you wake up with a sore back or a crick in your neck, check your mattress and pillows. If you think your mattress is too hard, put a layer of foam or some other soft material over it.

Keep the television out of the bedroom.

The television is a big distraction when it comes to bed time! Get it out of the bedroom.

Keep To A Regular Routine

Go to bed and get up at the same time each day – even at weekends. Have a relaxing routine before bed. A warm bath with bath salts is an excellent way to relax the body. Soft, soothing music may also help. Make sure you have a cd player that switches off automatically.

Remember, the most important thing about getting a good nights sleep is to get a quality bed such as a good quality memory foam divan bed
